As people's living standards continuously improve, the quality requirements for water are also gradually increasing. This is not only reflected in people's daily lives but also in the quality of water obtained using reverse osmosis purification equipment in industrial production, which is constantly being enhanced.

As we all know, reverse osmosis technology used in reverse osmosis purification equipment is widely applied in various industries, including: boiler makeup water in power plants, ultrapure water treatment in the electronics and semiconductor industries, pure water treatment in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, food, beverage, and drinking water treatment, seawater and brackish water desalination, and wastewater treatment in industries such as metallurgy, light industry, electroplating, and leather. However, the origin of the principle behind reverse osmosis equipment technology is rarely known.

How did the principle of reverse osmosis water purification equipment come into being?

The story goes like this: In 1950, American scientist Dr. S. Sourirajan, while observing seagulls, noticed that when a seagull skimmed the sea surface, it would scoop up a large mouthful of seawater, and after an interval of a few seconds, spit out a small amount. He was very puzzled, as land animals breathing with lungs cannot drink highly saline seawater. Later, after dissecting the seagull, he discovered that it did not directly swallow the seawater but stored it in its throat. The structure of the seagull's throat is composed of layered mucous membrane tissue. After the seawater was inhaled into its body, it was pressurized. Through this pressure, water molecules were forced to permeate through the mucous membrane, transforming into fresh water. The seagull absorbed this fresh water filtered by the mucous membrane tissue into its body and then spat out the remaining highly concentrated seawater. This was the secret to why seagulls could drink seawater. This is also the basic theoretical framework of the reverse osmosis method.

We can't help but marvel at the wonders of nature, which give us so much technological inspiration and also drive social progress. We are also grateful for this remarkable feat by the scientist, which has provided humanity with reverse osmosis water purification equipment.
